Rakhigarhi Findings Added to NCERT Books

SYLLBUS (Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society)

Why in news

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will include information about the Rakhigarhi archaeological site in Haryana in their textbooks. Here’s a breakdown of the key findings:

DNA Findings:

  • Analysis of ancient DNA suggests the Harappans’ genetic roots go back to 10,000 BCE.
  • Their DNA seems to be present in a majority of the South Asian population today.
  • This indicates genetic continuity for thousands of years, with less evidence of large-scale immigration.
  • Absorption of people from surrounding areas likely happened over time.

About Rakhigarhi:

  • Located 27 km from the Ghaggar river in the Ghaggar-Hakra river plain.
  • Dates back to 2600-1900 BCE, making it the largest Harappan site in India.

Findings at Rakhigarhi:

  • Granary: A structure with 7 rectangular/square chambers used for grain storage during the mature Harappan phase (2600-2000 BCE).
  • Culture and Religion: Fire altars and apsidal structures hint at religious practices.
  • Cemetery: A cemetery from the mature Harappan period with eight graves has been discovered.

This inclusion of Rakhigarhi findings in NCERT books will provide students with a better understanding of the Indus Valley Civilization (Harappan Civilization) and its significance in Indian history.
